Troubled about many things: O spraw wiele martwiona

How many times these low feet staggered,
Only the soldered mouth can tell;
Try! can you stir the awful rivet?
Try! can you lift the hasps of steel?

Stroke the cool forehead, hot so often,
Lift, if you can, the listless hair;
Handle the adamantine fingers
Never a thimble more shall wear.

Buzz the dull flies on the chamber window;
Brave shines the sun through the freckled pane;
Fearless the cobweb swings from the ceiling —
Indolent housewife, in daisies lain!

*****

Ileż to razy cierpły nogi te korne,
Tylko te usta uspolone mogą rzec;
Sprawdź! Poruszysz nit podły?
Sprawdź! Skoble stalowe uniesiesz?

Tknij czoła zimnego, często gorące,
Podnieś, jak możesz, włosy szare;
Dźwignij stwardniałe te palce
Naparstka nigdy już nie zaznają.

W oknie, leniwe muchy się kręcą;
W szybie upstrzonej, słońce dzielne;
Z sufitu, sieć pajęcza, nieustraszona —
W stokrotkach, gospodyni już obojętna!

TRANSLATOR’S NOTE

It was most probably the “steam engine era” to weigh on the Troubled about many things (Time and Eternity, XI), in a picture of a human as compared with a machine.
